Of all preschoolers who drown, 70 percent are in the care of one or both parents at the time of the drowning and 75 percent are missing from sight for five minutes or less. (Orange County, CA, Fire Authority)
Keeping children safe in and around water, even when they are not supposed to be near water, requires many different layers of protection. Many parents believe they will simply never allow their children to be in water alone. Statistics like the one above show that clearly more has to be done to share the realities of drowning and help adults keep children safe around water.
Today ten children will likely lose their life to drowning. Many more will suffer permanent brain damage. The majority of these situations are preventable. We must do all we can to educate people into keeping children safe.
Measures of safety include:
Constant Eyes On adult supervision
Self latching safety gates and safety fences around pools
Removal of pool toys from the water when not in use to avoid temptation
Removal of lawn chairs and other furniture that may be used to climb safety fences
Having a phone on the pool deck at all times to call 911 but never using it for social calls while supervising children in the water

At Swim Safe Forever, we are always happy for any opportunity to educate our community about water safety. The worst thing we can hear from a parent is that they did not know about water safety until it was too late. Please help us spread the message of water safety to save the lives of children in our community.
